امیرکبیر چهارسال نخست وزیر ایران بود. اصلاحاتی را بنا گذاشت که پس از مرگش متوقف ماند و فقط پس از سالها توسط یکی از آخرین نخست وزیران ناصرالدین شاه یعنی میرزاحسینخان سپهسالار دنبال شد که آنهم ناتمام ماند.
اما باز خواندن دو فرمان اعلام نخست وزیری و قتل امیرکبیر به لحظه ای فکر کردن می ارزد:

«امیرنظام،
ما تمام امور ایران را به دست شما سپردیم، و شما را مسئول هر خوب و بدی که اتفاق افتد می دانیم. همین امروز شما را شخص اول ایران کردیم، و به عدالت و حسن رفتار شما با مردم کمال اعتماد و وثوق داریم، و بجز شما به هیچ شخص دیگری چنین اعتقادی نداریم. و به همین جهت این دستخط را نوشتیم.»
و چهار سال بعد:

«چاکر آستان ملائک پاسبان، فدوی خاص دولت ابد مدت، حاج علی خان پیشخدمت خاصه، فراشباشی دربار سپهراقتدار مامور است که به فین کاشان رفته میرزا تقی خان فراهانی را راحت نماید. و در انجام این ماموریت بین الاقران مفتخر و به مراحم خسروانی مستظهر بوده باشد.»

و شگفتا که ما هنوز در دایره ی بسته ی استبداد و فساد مانده ایم. حالا اگر نه مراحم خسروانی، که امروز مراحم، آسمانی شده اند. بدون شک اگر امیرکبیر امروز به قدرت می رسید، همان سیاهه (لیست) وظایفی را که برای خود مقرر کرده بود کفایت می کرد ! مشکل تاریخی ما اینجاست.
